Decoration Day — 3 Comments

  1. Hahahaha! I was expecting a response from my EU readers (both of you) and to answer your question….of course not. This weekend and what it means is solely an American holiday. Tomorrow I’m off to Fort Indiantown Gap Military Reservation National Cemetary to visit my parents and to help place flags on the graves. It’s an important thing to me. I’ll bring my camera and post some pics of it.

  2. Having been born on May 30, I have always resented the government’s willingness to shift holidays around at will to make things easier for businesses to consolidate their paychecks.

“I was born on the ORIGINAL Memorial Day,” I would announce, annoyingly.

Now that I have a clearer idea of what it’s all about, there’s a bit of relief to me in sometimes not sharing the day; in sometimes being able to unabashedly revel in self-interest without feeling a conflict of interest around the gratitude and remembrance of the holiday itself.
